The following newsletter highlights the activities and events that took place during the last month at BISI.
A very warm welcome to the 2021-22 academic year!
For those in the community that do not know me; this is my 17th year at BISI and my 2nd year as Director, I am originally from the UK. A teacher of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, I now enjoy creating the school timetable, cooking (at home, not in the school canteen), taking photographs and overseeing the operations of the secondary school and Zekeriyaköy campus. Our school is a unique and special place, the diversity of our community and curriculum is reflected in our school motto – education transcends boundaries. We are rightly proud of the amazing achievements of our students and of the truly international nature of our school. We have families from over 40 different countries and experienced staff from 6 continents. Whilst education is always our main focus, safety during this period of a global pandemic has been, and continues to be, an important aspect of our operational practices, BISI will continue to meet and exceed the requirements of the Turkish government and puts the education and safety of students first and foremost.
Back to School
Back to school after a restful holiday. the students seem delighted to be back to the classroom and resume their schooling activities.

Year 9
This term, Year 9 students studying Computer Science took the Artificial Intelligence module and successfully completed the First Steps into Artificial Intelligence certificate from Microsoft.

Congratulations to Arshia, Harry, Azka, Jewel, Kyle, Lucas, Markus, Mila, Mohamed, Ryan, Siyeon and Sophia!
Both 9B and 9S attended a science session where they had the chance to look at stomata using the microscope.
Year 11 & 12

Several students enrolled in a découpage activity prior to the pandemic closure that focused on renewing several of the secondary library chairs. After a long break, these chairs were able to be varnished and returned to the library.  The process began with selecting specific library books, photographing pages from these books that were then glued and varnished onto the chairs. Special thanks to Tiara Norman, Markus Bekişoğlu, Yusra Shahjahan, Ziva Krizana Samardzic and Miss Elif Cankurt for the creation of these wonderful artworks.

Year 12 & 13
Students in Years 12 and 13 were involved in an outdoor team building activity with a group from the Outdoorturk training group . The students were involved in team building and problem solving tasks. This training will be helpful for the students in Years 12 and 13 to help with leadership tasks that they will engage during several CAS projects this year. Here are some photographs taken during the activities.

Coming up in October:

The Race and Inclusion Committee is pleased to announce that the school will be participating in Black History Month from the 1st October 2021. We are following the United Kingdom’s calendar for this acknowledgement of the way in which Black people play an important role in the world’s history. This year’s theme is, ‘Proud To Be’.

In secondary, students will learn about the role of Black people using google slides produced by the Committee. Morning form time will be dedicated to learning about the achievements of one person each day. On Friday 8th October there will be a no charge, non-uniform day where students are encouraged to wear the colours that represent Black History; yellow, red and green.

BISI is proud to be a school that celebrates diversity.

Year 12 students will be undertaking science Group 4 Projects on 14th and 15th October as a part of their science course requirement. The project will involve students from all of the science subjects we offer: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Systems and Societies, Physics and Sport Science.

Parent-Teacher meetings are scheduled to take place on Wednesday 20 October. As we are unlikely to be in a position to open the campus to parents when students are in school we will hold online meetings throughout the week beginning 18 October. Details will be shared separately.

On Friday 22 October students are invited to come to school in Halloween fancy dress.
