Volume 1 Number 13
Week in, Week out
A Secondary School publication

Welcome to edition 13 of our weekly Newsletter. An unlucky number for some, but hopefully not us. After a slow start to term 2 last week, the snow finally melted to make way for the beautiful Zekeriyakoy sunshine, which has definitely helped inject lots of energy in to the school environment.

Our PE department have got off to a great start this week with the girls and boys Volleyball teams, which you can catch up on in this week's edition and our Maths department are building up the pace to deliver what is set to be a very fun and successful 'Maths Week' next week. Lots of fun activities, daily quizzes and a day dedicated just to pi(e)s!..details to follow.

The sporting theme has been strong this week with our Friday MUFTI finishing off the week. House colours and sportswear were on show for our students and staff, in a bid to raise money for the student-led MUN due to be held at Zek campus later this month. Nothing like a bit of competitive spirit to finish off the week! The atmosphere in the school really is a fun one every Friday and sets the tone for a fantastic weekend ahead. There's never a dull moment at BISI, that's for sure.

Hope you enjoy the read!

WEEK IN
MEF Volleyball

Mr Kinnear - Physican Education Teacher:

Volleyball 🏐

BISI students (not for the first time this year), made their PE department very proud.  A whole 24 senior students competed against a selection of different MEF teams. Every one of the BISI students represented the school magnificently, showing great sportsmanship as well as athleticism throughout.

After only one training session both boys and girls teams competed excellently against an organised and talented opposition. The boys senior team won 2 games and lost 2 game and the girls team won 1 game and lost 2.

Overall however the winner was definitely Volleyball. A fantastic afternoon and a great start to the Volleyball season!!

International Women's Day

Ms Fieraru: CAS Coordinator

Today was International Women's Day, a day when all women must be praised and celebrated, where ever they are int he world.
Not all women are as fortunate as the ones around us, this is why we took the time during Friday afternoon activities to advocate with the year 8 for the cause of the unprivileged girls who want to go to school, who fight for their right to education.

The students watched some parts of the beautiful documentary "Hope for girls" and then we had a guest speaker Mrs. Sema Murat from the Association for the Support of Contemporary Living
(this is known in Turkey as CYDD), a dedicated lady who works without pause to see the girls in her care going to school. Her stories were inspirational and our students were keen to find more so we promised to pay them a visit later in the year.

At the end of the session we all appreciated the short presentation made by Ziva Krizana about the activity of her mother as the head officer at the International Catholic Migration Center in Istanbul.
It was such an inspirational session to find out that people care about WOMEN!
Mufti Day Fundraising

This month's MUFTI was held to raise money for the upcoming student-led MUN at Zek campus. Students and staff came dressed in their house colours of red, blue and green, and sportswear for the occasion, which made our Friday bright and colourful in the school.

Total raised: To be confirmed in next week's edition.
WEEK OUT
Maths Week

Next week will be Maths week at BISI for both our Primary & Secondary school. Mr Williams (Head of Mathematics) and the rest of the Maths department have been working hard to coordinate lots of activities and events to keep the students and staff very busy next week. Mr Williams has kindly shared a glance as to what we can expect over the course of next week:

Ongoing throughout the week:
* Form time Maths Puzzles every morning in registration, leading to prizes on Friday for the most successful forms.
* The BISI Pi-athon 2019, a big interactive event in Reception that will involve every member of the Secondary School (the details are still a secret at the moment, but all will be revealed on Monday!)
* a selection of puzzle displays in the Secondary ground-floor corridor

Tuesday during PSHE:
* a big carousel of different Maths activities, getting every student in the school involved in communicating their Maths in unusual settings

Wednesday lunchtime:
* a Mathematical Scavenger Trail, in which students can go around the school sniffing out clues that are all Maths-related but hidden as part of our everyday lives!

Thursday lunchtime:
* Pi Day celebrations

Friday morning:
* culmination of the daily Form Puzzles, in a form of treasure hunt
* MATHti - a mufti day, for which students are asked to dress as their favourite number, favourite geometric shape, a famous mathematician etc
* Key Stage 3 students helping out the activities in the Primary Maths Day event, organised by Zoe Cosnett

Friday lunchtime:
* A talk by visiting speaker Dana Elemara, a Mathematics Graduate from ULU who has worked at Goldman Sachs and is now a prize-winning entrepreneur.

Pictures and articles to follow next week!

Pi(e) Day

Next Thursday the Secondary school will be celebrating Pi(e) Day (14th March) where students can enjoy a selection of deliciously baked pies in varying forms as well as completing lots of mathematical challenges and activities, created by our Maths department. A memo and SMS have gone out to all parents this week requesting donations of pie themed baked goods that are strictly NUT-FREE! Ingredient slips can be collected from Aysegul at the reception desk and must be completed for every baked item which is donated. All pies can be dropped off in Dr Taylan Celtik's office which is based on the entry level of the Secondary building. Any baked donations will be very gratefully received.

This day has a long standing tradition in the school now and is organised by Dr Taylan Celtik, who is part of our Mathematics department.
Here are a few Pi facts provided by Dr Celtik:

Pi is a mathematical constant that is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, and it is also one of the most revered mathematical constants in the known world.

Pi Day was first officially celebrated on a large scale in 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium.

Since then, Pi Day has been celebrated by millions of students and math-lovers.
The holiday is celebrated on 14th day of the 3rd month, since 3, 1, and 4 are the three most significant digits in the decimal form of pi.

14th March = 14 th of 3 rd month = 3.14 = approximetely Pi

The Pi number is an irrational number and is 3.1415926535897932384626433832795... hard to memorise, right?

I'm sure Maths week is going to be an absolute success and we can't wait to share with you the results next week.

Happy baking!!!
Ski Trip - (11th - 16th March)

On Monday, a selection of our students will be setting off for a week of skiing in Pamporova, Bulgaria. We hope you have a wonderful time and look forward to heaing of your travels upon your return.

Have a great week!

And that brings our 13th edition to a close. We hope you've enjoyed reading it and wish you all a wonderful weekend.
