Week in, Week out
A Secondary School publication

Welcome to the fourth of our weekly letters about the events taking place in the Secondary School.

The main event which took place this week was the Bosphorus Cup 2018, which saw 19 swimmers across several age groups in Secondary competing with other schools from across Istanbul, Ankara & Izmir. The day was a roaring success and saw many of our students take to the podium to celebrate their successes. Well done to the entire team for your tremendous efforts!

On Friday 7th December the Secondary School continued with its tradition of the Aids Awareness MUFTI day. This is a tradition going back many years in which we all wear something red and raise money for Aids charities in Turkey. The fundraising activities which took place on Friday raised a grand total of 1335 TL, from the combined efforts of the red-themed bake sale and MUFTI. A big thank you to all who contributed and provided baked goods and also to those who kindly donated. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

When we started Week in, Week out, we were only able to send it to our Secondary parents, but we have been on a learning curve whilst producing it!  Last week we were able to extend our readership by sending it to our Secondary Teachers and this week's edition will be extended even further because we will be sending it to all of our Secondary Students.  Students, our teachers regularly contribute to Week in, Week out, so in the second term of the year we will be asking you to contribute as well!

While we are approaching the end of the school term, the school still has many activities going on to keep everyone busy until the winter break, as you will shortly be reading about. I really hope you enjoy the latest edition of our weekly Newsletter, but as we are still in the early stages of publishing, it would be good to hear & publish some of your feedback. What do you think about Week in, Week out? Do you like it? Is it a good idea or a terrible idea?  Is it what you want? Victoria (communications@bis.k12.tr) and I (williambradley@bis.k12.tr) would be delighted to hear from you and hope to publish a selection of replies in one of our publications before the winter break.

Enjoy the read!
WEEK IN

Bosphorus Cup 2018

BISI SWIM TEAM travelled to MEF International on Monday 10th December 2018 to participate in the swim meet, held at MEF school every academic year in the month of December.

BISI  had 19 swimmers competing in 2 separate age categories: 7 swimmers from year 7 and 12 swimmers from year 8 and above. The students competed against others from IICS Istanbul, MEF Istanbul, MEF Izmir and BESA Ankara.

The competition was an excellent event with BISI scooping up 31 individual medals, 1st place in 3 relay events and a BISI student on the podium for nearly every event.

A huge success for our swimmers and lots of confidence gained by our younger team members. Overall, an excellent day at the pool for BISI

Secondary Winter Showcase
On Friday afternoon the school enjoyed the annual Winter Showcase which, this year was heavily themed towards Alice and surrealism, though there were also some festive-themed treats. The showcase started with pieces performed by some of our Year 9 students, followed by the teachers' parody version of Alice. Other activities and performances included: festive songs - performed by the orchestra and choir in our Theatre and an awards ceremony for the Alice cast, with an encore for Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum which closed the afternoon's events.

In next week's issue we will bring you a complete list of the award winners!
Winter Jumper MUFTI
This week's MUFTI brings with it a festive theme. All those taking part were encouraged to come to school in their best winter jumpers. Stay tuned for next week's edition of the Newsletter where I'm sure we will have some excellent snapshots of winter-themed knitwear!
Festive Door Competition
Our secondary buildings have become a lot more colourful over the past week, following our Festive Door competition, coordinated by our Key Stage 4 & IGCSE Coordinator, Katya Skoudy. Students have been taking to the halls to collectively create some festive cheer and brighten up the doors. The top three door entries will be announced on Monday 17th December and we will be sharing pictures during next week's edition of Week in, Week out (the final edition for 2018).

KS3 Football - Friday Activity

After a whole term of good quality Football by the Mid School boys, we had our last, Friday Football last week. There were some amazing performances, goals and leadership shown by our different captains every week. Lots of our players also showed huge improvements; however, our awards went to:

Most improved player - Yudai - Year 7
Player of the Season - Alessandro C - Year 7

Congratulations to both!!

Senior School Basketball

The Senior School Basketball team played their first game on Wednesday 12th December against a very strong Gateway Academy team. Unfortunately, they proved too strong in the end; however, a special mention must be offered to Kayato in Year 10 for his 'Man of the Match' performance.
House Point Competiton Winners

On Tuesday 18th December our KS4 House Point competition winners listed below will be taken out for a treat - to Startbucks, along with our Key Stage 4 & IGCSE Coordinator, Katya Skoudy.

Year 10: Shakil Goudy, Lise Mereyde, Lauren Ates

Year 11 Ilkan Gezer and Eren I'Anson.

WEEK OUT
Christmas Lunch - 19th December 2018
Next week the school will be providing Christmas Lunch, served in our canteen for all students and staff to enjoy. And, happily reinstated from two years ago, our Senior Leadership Team, including our Communications Department, will be donning aprons and festive hats to serve meals to all our school members, including our Catering Team. The school Choir will be adding to the Christmas atmosphere with a selection of songs to accompany the festivities. And Alara Coban has promised to organise some festive music for us.
Staff v Student Football
Next Friday morning, just before the final assembly of the term - the most talked about event of the year - who is going to win the football... Staff?  Student?
Week in, Week out will be there with a full match report and the photo's that count!
And that brings our fourth edition of ‘Week in, Week out’ to a close. We hope you have enjoyed reading it!

We wish you all a wonderful weekend.
