Week in, Week out
A Secondary School publication

Welcome to the third of our weekly letters about the events taking place in the Secondary School. The main event taking place this week is our production of Alice, which our students and staff have been working incredibly hard on since September. The production will run for three evenings in our Theatre this week and we are incredibly proud of the talent and effort which has gone in to the making of the production and we hope you managed to get to see one of the performances.

Following our Movember campaign activities and Mufti on Friday of last week, the total amount raised was: 1679.75tl, of which, 359.25 tl was raised from the Shave-off and the remaining total from the Mufti. The winner of our 'Which MO gets your DOUGH' competition was Paddy Williams who won a trip to a Turkish Barber for his tremendous efforts.  There were also two others who won a trip to the barber, and Eliot can be seen enjoying his win below.  Thank you for all your kind and generous donations and to all who got involved and contributed to the variety of activities throughout November.

Eliot Taylor enjoys being pampered at the barbershop with a shave after a month of moustache growing!
It would be good to publish some feedback on our new weekly magazine - what do you think about Week in, Week out?  Do you like it?  Do you not?  Is it a good idea or a terrible idea? Is it what you want? Victoria (communications@bis.k12.tr) and I (williambradley@bis.k12.tr) would be delighted to hear from you and hope to publish a selection of replies in one of our publications before the winter break.

Enjoy the read!
WEEK IN
School Production - Alice
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The Secondary Production - Alice - was performed to full houses in the school theatre.  Involving no less than 66 students from both Primary and Secondary this show was the latest one of a long line of fabulous productions at this time of year. Stretching back to The Lion King in 2010, BISI students have brought to life some spectacular productions over the years - Daisy Pulls It Off, The Wizard of Oz, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Importance of Being Earnest, Romeo and Juliet, Ebeneezer and now Alice have all been memorable performances.  Our directors of these shows, Michael Fenwick, Sophie Slav, Dominic Sargent and Scott Cosnett have managed to bring out better and better performances from our students.  Alice, this week's production, has continued in this long tradition of improving on the previous year's work.  There is no doubt that with Alice, the bar has been moved higher than ever before.  If you missed it... I'm sorry but you missed an absolute treat, watch out for our production at around this time next year!
Week in, Week out is proud to offer our heartiest

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
to every member of the cast and crew of this brilliant production.

IGCSE & IB Diploma Theatre Trip - Pygmalion
On Thursday 6th December all of BISI's IGCSE Drama and IB Theatre students set out for a theatrical treat at the Kenter Theatre. Besides exposing the students to a magnificent theatre oozing with atmosphere, it also allowed them to take-in a highly stylised performance of George Bernard Shaw's 'Pygmalion'. Students witnessed a small troupe perform daring feats of physical theatre whilst still maintaining the essence and themes of the original text. Students were delighted by the mask work used at the end to emphasise one of the central messages of the play. We hope that the experience will inspire our drama and theatre students to take risks in their own work.
Red Themed Mufti and Bake Sale - Aids Awareness - Friday
In a photograph set up by David Mayer and taken by Sandra Scotland, the secondary staff show their support for aids awareness by wearing red.  Money collected during today's mufti and bake sale will be donated to Aids charities in Turkey and the exact amount raised will be published in the next edition of Week in, Week out.
TIMUN 6 - 9 December
On Thursday afternoon Kaan Kafkaslı, Alara Yücel, Berke Yüksekkaya, Arman Hemmati and Aral De Moor, all Year 12, made the short trip across the Bosphorus to Uskudar American Academy not simply as BISI students but, for the next four days, as the delegates of the Republic of South Africa. The occasion? The 25th Turkish International Model United Nations Conference. Mr. Marsden (Thursday), Mr. Taylor (Friday and Saturday) and Mr. Tarbuck (Sunday) will all have the pleasure of accompanying them and look forward to seeing the students in action. All five students looked smart and were well prepared for the coming four days. Our Ambassador, Kaan, belied his last minute tie adjustments with his enthusiasm, organisation and preparation and each of our students are ready to thrive, seasoned MUNers as they now are.
Primary Winter Bazaar
The Primary Winter Bazaar was held on Friday 7 December.  Organised by the PTA the Winter Bazaar is an annual fun event in the school that also raises money for charity.
Although it is essentially a Primary School event, the Secondary School are always invited to visit and sometimes run their own stalls.  But mainly they enjoy the shopping!
WEEK OUT
Festive Door Competition
Every year Ms Skoudy organises a Festive Door Competition in the Secondary School, so watch out for doors turning into gorgeously gift-wrapped gifts, delightfully decorated trees and as many festive themed ideas as our students can think of.  Mr Bradley and Ms Sykes would love to have students come and decorate their doors this year!
Inter-school sports
We may be approaching the end of the term but our sporting action continues apace.  19 members of our swim team travel to MEF International on Monday to compete in an Istanbul Schools League swim meet against MEF International, MEF Izmir and IICS.  Best wishes to all of our team - we look forward to you coming back with the trophies!

And...
MEF International and IGA will both be coming to BISI on Wednesday to compete in a friendly basketball mini tournament against our Senior Boys team.  Good luck to our senior boys - it may be a friendly but we look forward to reporting on convincing victories!
IGCSE Mock Exams
Once the winter holidays are over, Year 11 and 13 go straight into their mock exams... however, for IGCSE Art and IGCSE ICT exams exam season starts early!  Tuesday and Wednesday for IGCSE Art and Thursday and Friday for IGCSE ICT.  Best wishes to the 10 Year 11 students involved.
Winter Jumper Mufti
Friday 14 December is a free mufti day - the Winter Jumper mufti - teachers, students and parents are invited to dress in their very best winter jumper for the day!
The Secondary Winter Showcase
Also on Friday is the Secondary Winter Showcase between 1:50 and 3:30. The traditional showcase is a chance for students and teachers (and sometimes parents) to showcase their talents - their will be music, extracts from Alice, the teacher parody of Alice, songs and more.  So put on your best winter jumper and come and joins us at the Secondary Winter Showcase.
And that brings our third edition of ‘Week in, Week out’ to a close. I hope you have enjoyed reading it!

We wish you all a wonderful weekend.
