Volume 1 Number 2
Week in, Week out
A Secondary School publication

Welcome to the second of our new weekly letters about the events taking place in the Secondary School.  The main event taking place this week is our annual celebration of the success of our IGCSE students, the 2018 IGCSE Awards Ceremony and you can read more about that below.

This is traditionally a busy time of year for the school, quite apart from the special events which take place, teachers have now started the process of writing reports which will be sent out on the last day of the term, so everyone is super busy at the moment!

We have our Movember mufti on Friday, the last day of the month when we will let you know how much we have raised for men's health charities, you can read more about that  below.

It would be good to publish some feedback on our new weekly magazine - what do you think about Week in, Week out?  Do you like it?  Do you not?  Is it a good idea or a terrible idea.  Is it what you want?  Victoria ( and I ( would be delighted to hear from you and hope to publish a selection of replies in one of our publications before the winter break.

Enjoy the read!
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11 BISI Students from Year 8 through to Year 12 and accompanied by Mr Taylor and Mr Kumar, attended the inaugural IIMUN Conference hosted by IELEV School in Çekmeköy. Initial butterflies were short lived and all of our students were able to settle into a rhythm as the conference went on. For many this was a first experience of Model United Nations and they were all great ambassadors for the School. By the end of the weekend the students were able to go away knowing that they had made a real impact! Resolutions were passed, speeches were made and lots was learnt. Well done!
Our students arrive at IELEV full of nervous anticipation but they settled in quickly and were soon all smiles as, for many of them, their first MUN experience got underway.
IB Mathematics Syllabus
Next year, the IB syllabus for Mathematics is changing and the names of the new courses will be as follows: Mathematics - Applications and Interpretation (Standard Level and Higher Level) and Mathematics - Analysis and Approaches (Standard Level and Higher Level).  In order to prepare for this change, Dr. Çeltik, of the British International School, will be completing a one month, online, up-skilling training course, to ensure that BISI is fully prepared for the coming changes.
IGCSE Awards Ceremony
Green, blue and white balloons and a huge banner greeted our IGCSE awardees on Wednesday afternoon. Proud parents, the school’s board members, teachers and students gathered in the theatre to celebrate the fantastic achievements and successes of the class of 2018.  The weather and the technical glitches didn’t dampen the festive atmosphere and the enjoyment of the afternoon when about 40 students were acknowledged and rewarded for their hard work and achievements last summer.
Professor Dr Semra Șardaș and Mr Bradley present Dağhan with his IGCSE Certificate
Lise Mereyde opened the ceremony with a beautifully performed piece, the 3rd movement Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No 17 in D minor –Allegretto The Tempest,  followed by Seungjune Min on the guitar playing “Adelita” by Francesco Tarrega.  Kayato Turhan delighted us on the piano with Tchaikovsky’s June Barcarolle, The Seasons.  Our guest speaker this year was Dr. Semra Șardaș who shared her experiences and gave us her insights about careers and the future.  It was a ceremony for which the current Year 12 and Year 11 will have memorable and cherished memories, despite the technology!
Our Year 11 and Year 12 students along with our Key Stage 4 Coordinator, Katya Skoudy, take time out from their IGCSE Awards Ceremony celebrations. Congratulations on your achievements go to all of the IGCSE Class of 2018 and to those Year 11 students who took IGCSE examinations a year early .
Special thanks go to:
Our wonderful PTA who worked incredibly hard to decorate the theatre and the foyer and who brought in so much food for everyone to enjoy

Our wonderful Creative Arts department for putting up the beautiful artwork that was displayed in the theatre foyer
Our wonderful Chef Recep and his staff for the excellent cake
And everyone else who helped to make the event so special for our students.
Moustache mufti day
The amount of money raised for Movember charities will be reported in Week in, Week out next week.

Coming up from the PTA
Our monthly PTA meeting takes place this Monday at 9am in the Primary Staff Room.  All are welcome.
Friday is our Winter Bazaar, we happily invite all of our parents.  Opening hours are 10am - 2pm. Secondary students can attend too.

Our Primary children will have activities in the classrooms, but our PTA hold a Bazaar in the Gym. Vendors will be selling, cakes, clothes, jewellery, art and craft, seasonal gifts , Tirtl book shop, and Nar stationery shop are coming too. This is a great time to do your Christmas/New Year Shopping. There will also be a second hand uniform sale.

The PTA is also having a cake stall, all proceeds from the cake stall will go to charity. We would appreciate any cakes or cookies, but please make sure they are totally nut free.

As the Bazaar is held in the gym, we request only flat shoes be worn, so that we can protect the gym floor.

To volunteer to help for the bazaar, for an hour,... for the day... please click on the link here.

See you there
I wish you all a wonderful weekend.
