The BISI Board of Govenors are dynamically involved in the running of the school and gather on a monthly basis to discuss all school related matters.

Erdal Sezen - Chairman of the Board                                                                                

Erdal was born in Ankara, Turkey. In 1974 he completed his middle school years at EHFB English High School in Istanbul. He then attended Paddington Technical College in London where he studied Pure/Applied Maths and Physics. He later moved to California where he took a Major in Electronics and Computer Engineering and a Minor in Computer Science. In 1982 he attended Stanford University where he obtained his MBA Degree. Whilst in California he met with his wife, Alexandra and they have two children, a daughter and a son. 


Erdal then proceeded to become the founder of many international companies in various countries including, Alpine Industries Trading Electronic Components), PDI LTD: Ukraine Telecommunication Engineering, Installation and Service Company For GSM Networks Located in Kiev Ukraine, Precision Design Inc: Design and Manufacturing of Multi-Layer Printed Circuit Boards For Commercial and Military Operations in California USA, PDI-Erkom A.S: Government IT Contractual Company in Ankara Turkey, Precision Design Intelligence: Media


Online and IT: Internet and Marketing both Located in Istanbul Turkey and finally BISI (PDI-Er A.S): The British International School in Istanbul.Erdal spends most of his time travelling between his various businesses but his country of residence is Istanbul. His hobbies are Scuba Diving, Skiing, Photography and Travelling.



Alexandra Sezen - Permanent Board Member                                                                               

Born in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, of Greek origin, enjoyed a wonderful childhood until the revolution which forced her to leave Ethiopia, however she was able to complete her secondary school education before leaving.


Alexandra moved to England where she continued her education in foreign languages. On a holiday trip to San Francisco she met her husband and later married him in England. They have two children Seline and Taner.


Alexandra and her husband worked together and established a company in the USA and later moved to Turkey. 



Erik Klomp - Board Member                                                                                

Erik Klomp is a Dutch citizen who graduated as a civil engineer. He started his working career as a dredging engineer in Saudi Arabia working for an international contractor. After 2 years he decided to continue his education and studied marketing and sales for his second degree. He continued his career by working for an international trade agency which specialised in trade in Eastern Europe and Russia.


After gaining enough export experience he became International Sales Manager for a large Dutch trading company focusing on the, at that time, newly emerging Russian market. Seeing the opportunities in the fast growing market in Russia, he started his own business which concentrated on the sales of construction materials. Twelve years after his start in Moscow he finally ended up in Istanbul.


Today his own business, named Novodoor, has developed well and became a major door supplier for contractors in Turkey and abroad.Erik is married and has three children at the BISI. He likes to travel with his family abroad to gain new experiences and loves all kinds of adventurous sports.


Erik has been a member of the Board of Governors of BISI since 2009. His goal is that BISI will continue to be the best International School in Turkey and that the Board of Governors, the school leadership, the parents and the students will cooperate in such a way to achieve the best out of it!



Mark Dekker - Board Member                                                                                

Mark Dekker is a Dutch national, born in Rotterdam and graduated at Groningen University with a degree in Economics. After starting his career in Financial Advisory with Ernst & Young and a stint as Finance Director of a software start-up, he joined the pharmaceutical industry in 2003 and has since then assumed miscellaneous financial and general management roles in The Netherlands, the UK, Turkey and Romania.


Having already worked and lived in Turkey from 2008 until 2012, he returned to İstanbul in the summer of 2015 to take up the position of Managing Director of Astellas Turkey, the Turkish affiliate of Japanese pharmaceutical multinational Astellas. Because of the extended period he has now spent residing and managing a company in Turkey, Mark believes this has provided him a great appreciation and good understanding of what it entails to do business in and to be a member of the community in this country.


Mark is married and has a son and a daughter, who both attended Primary at BISI during the Dekker’s first period in Istanbul and who are now both at BISI in Secondary. This has instilled in him a keen interest and strong commitment towards the continuous development and strengthening of BISI, and he is certain that with his experience and commitment he will meaningfully contribute to achieving the Board’s objective of maintaining BISI’s position as number one International School in Istanbul.



Martin Thomsen - Board Member 

BP Fuels Country Manager - Turkey                                                                        

Martin Thomsen was appointed as Fuels Country General Manager to BP Turkey in January, 2014.

Prior to his appointment to Turkey, Martin was responsible for the executive management of BP’s 700 retail network in Spain.

Martin joined BP in 2005, and has since worked in various executive management positions, including Strategy, Planning and Portfolio Manager, Retail and Wholesale Commercial Optimization Manager for Spain and Portugal, as well as European Business Development Manager and chief of staff for European retail business in London.


Prior to his BP career, Martin worked for Repsol, and Booz & Co., where he led Business Development, M&A and strategic projects for major energy companies in Europe.

Martin, originally from Brazil, is a graduate of Buenos Aires Institute of Technology in 1995, and has an EMBA from IE. He is married, with three children.

Levent Kafkasli

Education: Istanbul Technical University, Civil Engineering Department, B.Sc, 1987, University of Istanbul, Construction Management MBA 1988.

Career: He has started his professional career, in 1988 as Site Engineer at various companies. He joined Tekfen Construction and Installation Co., Inc. in 1990. He was Site Engineer, Company Representative, Head Office Coordinator, Project Manager at sites, respectively until 2005.
Mr. Kafkaslı who was Vice President in Azfen JV from 1999 to 2000, was appointed as Vice President, Operations Responsible for Caspian Region in 2005. In May 2013, he was appointed as the President of Tekfen Construction.

Mr. Kafkaslı is married, with 2 children and fluent in English
