CAS AT THE BRITISH SCHOOL
The IB Diploma Programme focuses on producing well balanced, critical thinkers. For IB students this means CAS, fifty hours each of Creativity, Action and Service. The aim of CAS is to allow IB student to grow and explore in an area that doesn't include academic or scholarly life. As students participate in CAS, they are challenged to develop their existing skills as well develop new ones. The creativity aspect of CAS includes activities involving music, art, drama, as well as designing and implementing Service activities, for example organising a charity event. The Action aspect focuses on physical activity such as individual sports or team sports. Expeditions or working on local projects can also be classified as Action. Lastly, the Service aspect of the CAS programme focuses on being active in the local community and making a positive impact. This includes a wide range of charities such as retirement homes, orphanages and refugee centres.
CAS is new for Year 12 students, however more students are involved in many interesting activities; the annual pantomime, dance class workshops, after school sports, art lessons, MUN, speed boating, organising various school events and kick boxing to name but a few. Our Year 12 students have been involved with charitable work and raising money for various charities including the "Little Sisters of the Poor". Later on in the year , they will also complete group projects such as the fashion and talent shows. The aim of the group projects is to design, organise and implement a service that can raise money to be donated to charities. Although CAS has added an extra element to school life, it is also rewarding to work towards worthy causes.
As for Year 13, most students have completed their CAS. They have been engaged with a range of different activities for the past year and are in the process of reflecting upon their activities prior to submitting their CAS reports to the IB. Amongst the boys, football was a popular activity in which the Year 13’s participated in inter-school tournaments representing our school as the senior team, as well as attending regular training sessions. Other sports activities included swimming (in which one of our students has been competing professionally out of school), volleyball and tennis. As well as sport, some members of Year 13 also attended conferences for MUN, while others have been involved in photography, singing and school productions. In January 2010, Year 13 organised an overnight sports marathon. The purpose of which was to raise money for funding Year 13 charity activities, specifically for helping local village schools. The students raised 3000YTL in one night and it is hoped the Sports Marathon becomes an annual event.
CAS is becoming a memorable experience for all our IB students.
